Where ordinary errands get done
Rapid City is the region's big box errand hub, and that is why a smaller town's guide usually names the larger town it leaves for. Spearfish works differently: a walkable downtown that covers a lot of ordinary shopping without the drive.

Lakes and boats
Five lakes for a real boat
If you are bringing a real boat, there are five lakes I'd put on your radar first: Belle Fourche Reservoir up north, Newell Lake, Pactola and Sheridan in the Central Hills, and Angostura south of Hot Springs. These are the all-out lakes, the ones people here use for full-size boats and motorized watersports. The rest of the water in the Hills runs smaller or tighter, and that is a different kind of day.

Not every lake is for a ski boat
The lakes below run no wake or electric motors only, or sit small inside Custer State Park. Fine for a paddle, a fishing line or a swim. Not where you take the wake boat.

People here live in one town and boat, ride or ski somewhere else in the Hills all the time. The five lakes above take a full-size boat and motorized watersports. The rest run no wake, electric only, or sit small inside Custer State Park.
Rules and water levels change. Check current Game, Fish and Parks and Forest Service rules before you tow anything, and treat a blank use on this page as a question to confirm, not a no.
