Established In-Town Neighborhoods
The plat names you will see on Sturgis listings, street by street, with city plowing and Main Street a walk away from parts of it.
Facts checked August 2026
Big trees over the street, a city plow that comes through, and Main Street close enough to walk to from parts of it. This is the ordinary Sturgis most people buy. The confusing part is the names. A listing says Murray or Golden Hills or Hillside Terrace and that tells you which recorded plat your title work will use, not what the block looks like. These plats went in across different decades, so one subdivision name can cover streets that look nothing alike. So the useful question is not which name, it is which era and which slope.
How the named plats differ
Original Town, Dudley & Caldwell, Bosworth, Glover's and the McMillan plats are the old core near Main Street. Oldest stock in town, closest walk to the coffee and the courthouse, and the plats where the roof, the wiring and the heat system carry the inspection.
Ash's Ext, Hillview and Deadman Sub fill in the middle of town. Deadman is the one buyers tend to like on sight: quiet streets, mature yards, full basements. All three sit in the lower assessed bands in the table without being the oldest housing in town, which is a combination worth looking at.
Vernon Heights, Palisades and Dolan Creek Estates are the newer, higher end of the list. Sloped ground, views out toward Bear Butte and the Hills, newer systems, and driveways worth checking for which direction they face in February. Murray and Potters sit in between, and Pine Acres is the newer pocket southwest by Exit 32.
Then there are names that live on listings but not in the county record, like Comstock, Golden Hills, Backcountry Estates and the Pleasant Valley ground east of I-90.
Two things about buying in town
Rally week in August is at your door here rather than a few blocks off, and how much that matters depends on the block. Some streets rent out and leave for the week. Some barely notice past the noise.
Creek Side, the city's own workforce housing plat on about an acre and a quarter of city ground on Woodland Drive, sited outside the 100 year floodplain with owner occupancy required, has had all homes sold. You cannot buy into it today, but it is worth knowing that this city will develop ground itself when the market will not.

Hail season here runs from late May through August, so ask for the roof age, the last claim history and any impact-resistant rating before you write.
Property taxes
Look up the actual assessed value and the current levy for the parcel instead of trusting the listing figure, which is often a year or more behind.

Drinking water
Every public water system publishes an annual water quality report. Read the one for the system that serves the address you are considering, not the one for the town next door. Rapid City water quality reports · City of Box Elder Water Division · City of Spearfish water · EPA drinking water lookup
