Moving to Rapid City: the questions people ask

Every week somebody lands in my inbox or in a Facebook group with the same handful of questions, and they are never the ones the relocation articles answer. Nobody wants the median household income. They want to know if there is a Costco.

So here are the real answers.

Is there a Costco?

No. Not in Rapid City, not anywhere in western South Dakota. The state has exactly one, in Sioux Falls, which is about five hours and 350 miles from here. Billings is about six hours the other way. Either one is an overnight trip, not an errand.

What we have is Sam's Club on Eglin Street. That is the warehouse answer and it is the one locals use.

While I am ruining your afternoon: there is no Trader Joe's anywhere in South Dakota, no Whole Foods anywhere in South Dakota, and no Aldi in Rapid City. The nearest Aldis are in Sioux Falls and Watertown.

The Costco rumor comes around about once a year and local TV has run segments debunking it more than once. There is a live petition for a Trader Joe's. I am telling you this so you hear it from me instead of finding out on a Saturday.

So what is the biggest grocery store?

Two Walmart Supercenters, on North Lacrosse and on Stumer Road. One Target, at Rushmore Crossing. Two Safeways, on Mount Rushmore Road and on Mountain View. Two Family Fare stores, on East Saint Patrick and on Mountain View, both remodeled a few years back.

In Spearfish it is Safeway on North Avenue and Lueder's Food Center on North 7th, which is locally run. In Sturgis it is Lynn's Dakotamart. Box Elder's own retail is thin, so most people there drive a few minutes into Rapid City or shop the commissary if they are on base.

And the mall changed its name. Rushmore Mall became Uptown Rapid in 2021. Same building on the east side, and older directions, signs and listings still call it Rushmore Mall.

Does DoorDash work here?

Yes. DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub and Instacart all operate in Rapid City.

Uber runs 24 hours, and coverage reaches out to Black Hawk, Box Elder, Summerset, Piedmont, Keystone, Sturgis, Deadwood and Custer. Lyft runs too. Uber's own site warns that pickup times here run longer than in a bigger city, which is fair.

The thing that changed shipping in the Black Hills: Amazon opened a delivery station in Box Elder in October 2024, forty thousand square feet, serving a sixty mile radius. Before that everything routed through Sioux Falls. If somebody tells you Amazon takes a week out here, they are describing 2023.

Can I get by without a car?

No. I would rather say that plainly than let you find out.

Rapid Ride runs six routes on 35 minute frequencies, weekdays 6:20am to 5:50pm, Saturdays 9:50am to 4:40pm, and no service on Sunday. Riders 18 and under ride free. It is a real service and it is not a car replacement, and if you are a one car household that is worth knowing before you pick a house.

What internet can I get?

This is the question that decides which listings a remote worker can even look at, and the answer changes by address rather than by town.

In Rapid City proper you have real options: Midco and Bluepeak both up to a gig on cable, Epic iO, CenturyLink with a fiber footprint, T-Mobile and Verizon home 5G, and Starlink everywhere.

Up in the Hills it narrows fast. Rockerville, Nemo, Hisega, Johnson Siding, the canyon roads: realistically you are looking at fixed wireless or Starlink.

If you work from home, check serviceable speeds with the providers at every address on the list before you tour. It is a fifteen minute job and I have watched it kill a deal at the last minute more than once.

How bad is winter, honestly?

It used to be harsh. It is not what it was.

We get about two weeks of genuinely extra cold and the rest of the time you will see people out in hoodies in January. Forty degrees in January feels like summer here and you will catch yourself doing it too by your second year.

Now the parts people get wrong:

April is our snowiest month, at 10.1 inches on average, ahead of March at 8.4 and February at 7.7. January is only 5.3. So the snow you are picturing in December is really a spring event. Snow season runs roughly late October to early May and the annual average is 48.5 inches.

Elevation changes everything. The National Weather Service puts average monthly snowfall at five inches in Rapid City and fifteen inches in the Black Hills. In March the northern Hills can take 15 to 25 inches while the southern Hills get 8 to 12. A buyer in Rapid Valley and a buyer in Lead are not buying the same winter. This is the single biggest reason I ask where in the Hills before I answer a weather question.

And then there is the chinook. Warm wind comes over the Hills and the temperature does things that sound made up. Spearfish holds the world record: on January 22, 1943, it went from four below to forty five above in two minutes. That is not a local legend, it is the Guinness record.

January is also our windiest month.

What do I need to own?

A vehicle you trust on grade in snow, and how much that matters depends entirely on where you buy. A flat lot in Rapid Valley and a driveway on the ridge are different problems.

Ask me about the snow route your street sits on. Rapid City sorts streets into Level A, B and C, and A gets cleared first. Some neighborhoods are almost entirely Level A. Chapel Valley does not have a single Level A street in it. That is on the neighborhood pages here and it is not published anywhere else that I know of.

Why is my insurance quote so high?

Hail. We sit in an active hail corridor and roofs here take a beating, which is why this town has an entire industry of roofing contractors who will walk you through an insurance claim.

Before you budget a monthly payment, find out the roof's age and material, and read the policy for a separate percentage wind and hail deductible, which a lot of regional policies carry. It is not the same as your regular deductible and it surprises people about a week before closing.

There is no state income tax. So is it cheap here?

Half true, and I would rather you hear the whole thing.

There is genuinely no state income tax. Sales tax runs 6.2 percent in Rapid City. But Pennington County property tax runs about 1.00 percent effective with a median bill near $3,591, against a national average closer to 0.89 percent. And the overall cost of living here indexes at about 99 against a national 100, with utilities at 102.

So this is a roughly average cost market where the savings show up on your income tax return, not on your grocery bill. Anybody selling you Rapid City as cheap is selling.

How far am I from everything?

Denver is about six hours by car or a 55 minute flight. Sioux Falls is about five. Billings is about six. Minneapolis and Omaha are fly-to, not drive-to.

Out of Rapid City Regional, year round nonstops are a five destination list: Dallas Fort Worth, Denver, Las Vegas, Minneapolis St. Paul, and Phoenix Mesa. Everything else is seasonal. Denver and Minneapolis are your connecting hubs, and the airport is about nine miles from town.

If you fly for work, look at that list closely before you take the job. It is the single most underrated thing about living here.

What about healthcare?

Monument Health Rapid City Hospital on Fairmont is the regional referral center and a verified Level II trauma center, taking over 3,000 traumas a year from parts of five states. There are Monument hospitals in Spearfish and Sturgis too, and an orthopedic and specialty hospital on Caregiver Circle.

Level II is not Level I. Highly specialized tertiary care generally refers out, and that usually means Denver, Sioux Falls or Billings. Worth knowing if you or someone in your house has an ongoing specialty need.

For veterans: the VA Black Hills system runs two campuses and neither is in Rapid City. They are at Fort Meade near Sturgis and at Hot Springs. There is a VA outpatient clinic in Rapid City on Promise Road, but inpatient and specialty care is at one of those two campuses. People get this wrong constantly.

The Ellsworth gate at shift change

This is about as wild as our rush hour gets.

You get a mix of folks heading out of Box Elder back toward their homes and a run of four way stops and stoplights all waiting on the same green. It clears. It is not a metro commute and it never will be. But if you are timing a showing or planning a school run, that is the window to know about.

Every drive time on this site was measured with clear roads. Add to it at shift change.

I am PCSing to Ellsworth. On base or off?

Base housing occupancy at Ellsworth has never dropped below 95 percent, and waits run three to twelve months depending on rank category. That turns "which do I prefer" into "what is my actual plan," and it is buried in a newcomer PDF almost nobody reads.

Two more things for incoming households:

School district depends on the address, not the town. Douglas, Rapid City Area and Meade all serve ground near the base and the lines interleave. Apple Valley in Rapid Valley has the boundary running through the middle of the subdivision. The district's assignment for the exact address controls, so confirm it there. The Ellsworth School Liaison Office is at 605-385-1381.

And you do not wait 90 days to hunt or fish. South Dakota normally requires 90 days of domicile for resident licensing, but service members continuously stationed in this state qualify as residents regardless of how long they have been here, and so do their spouses. Resident annual fishing is $31 against $80 nonresident. Nobody tells incoming buyers this and it is worth real money.

What about the Rally?

Ten days starting the first Friday in August. In 2026 that was August 7 through 16.

The state DOT counts vehicles at nine entry points into Sturgis, and the first seven days of the 2026 rally drew 360,116 vehicles, with the peak Saturday at 58,519. Historic attendance sits near half a million.

Practically: June through August is the tourist season, and the first two weeks of August are the sharpest, especially on I-90, SD-79 and the Sturgis and Box Elder corridor. Some people leave town for it. Some people rent their house out for it and pay for a vacation. A lot of people just plan their errands differently for ten days.

And what do people do here?

The Mickelson Trail runs 109 miles from Edgemont to Deadwood on crushed limestone, with 15 trailheads and four rock tunnels. A trail pass is $4 a day or $15 a year for anyone 12 and up.

The Centennial Trail runs 123 miles from Wind Cave up to Bear Butte.

Terry Peak near Lead tops out at 7,064 feet with about 30 runs and four lifts, three of them high speed.

There are around seven breweries in Rapid City proper and more scattered through the Hills.

And this is not a 24 hour city. The Safeway on Mountain View runs until midnight and that is about the extent of late night outside downtown and outside tourist season. If you are coming from somewhere with a 2am taco place, adjust.

One more thing about childcare

South Dakota has roughly 60,000 school age kids who need afterschool or summer care and about 20,000 slots, across 117 licensed programs statewide. There is no dedicated state funding for afterschool programs.

Start that search before you close, not after. It is the single most common thing I watch buyers get caught out by, and it has nothing to do with the house.

I keep a separate directory of every preschool and private school in the region, including the towns that have none.
